Lossy refers to file formats that use a form of compression that reduces the amount of data within a file. This is done by discarding information that results in a loss of quality. In some cases this is acceptable, and undetectable. In other cases, a loss of quality can be a serious hinderance, and not acceptable. Furthermore, once the information is lost, you can’t get it back. JPEG and GIF are lossy file formats.
